kirbywasthere: There are a lot of great things to be said about Chasing Amy, but the thing I often find myself coming back to over and over again is Holden and Banky’s friendship. Smith’s treatment of the straight male friendship as bromance, pioneered the concept long before the term became a part of the popular lexicon.   Ultimately Smith’s portrayal of male friendship is a tragic one. Holden and Bankey’s split over a woman is inevitable; there is simply not enough time or emotional space for Holden to carry on both relationships. The story is complicated by Bankey’s own struggle with his sexuality and made doubly tragic by the fact that when the movie is over both men are alone, satisfied only by their work. Smith’s deft handling of this tragedy is just one of many things that make Chasing Amy a phenomenal film and his best work.
