Although known to be closed Entity, Verizon has joined with LiMO foundation as a core member. This may be a signal that open platforms are the becoming the foundations to the communication devices. Google with Android, Apple with iPhone, and LiMO with Linux based devices are envisioned to become the major players of the game. Initiated by Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics and Vodafone—LiMo was formed to deliver an open and globally consistent software platform based upon Mobile Linux for use by the whole industry to catalyze next-generation mobile consumer experiences. By participating in LiMo, Verizon hopes to help LiMo unify the mobile industry around openness and Linux as the key enablers to lowering development costs.

Las intenciones de MTN Group están quedando bastante claras, quieren tener una buena participación en el mercado de la India, y no dudarán en intentar convencer a cualquier operadora que se les cruce.

Hace unos días les comentábamos que Bharti Airtel se había echado atrás en las negociaciones con MTN, porque la intención del último mencionado era de convertir a Bharti en una subsidiaria… algo que les pegó en el orgullo.

Ahora nos enteramos que MTN ha comenzado a negociar con Reliance Communications, que también opera en India, con la intención de una posible alianza (aunque esperemos que no terminen intentando menospreciarlos como pasó con Bharti).

Ambas empresas han anunciado de forma oficial, que mantendrán negociaciones exclusivas durante 45 días, pero no dieron muchos detalles en cuanto a las intenciones de cada parte.

Esta alianza, de llevarse a cabo, no sería tan importante como con Bharti Airtel, que iba a concentrar unos 130 millones de suscritos, sino que solo llegarían a unos 100 millones, lo cual los dejaría un poco más abajo en la escala de operadores más grandes a nivel mundial.

LG Electronics (LG) announced that it sales of these touchscreen phones reached 7 million units at the end of the second quarter. This comes just five quarters after LG launched the world’s first full touchscreen handset, the Prada Phone by LG.

Of LG’s touch-based phones, the Viewty, a professional-level camera phone, is its top seller, surpassing 2 million units. The phone’s popularity lies in its sharp 5.0-megapixel camera and easy touchscreen interface that allows for easy editing of photos. Runners up include Venus, based around LG’s intuitive touch-sensitive InteractPad™, and Voyager, the first handset to incorporate both a full touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard. These phones sold 1.6 and 1.3 million units respectively. The Prada Phone by LG was also a strong seller, even at its original premium price.

Touchscreens Leading LG’s business and brand

Increasing sales of touchscreen phones were a strong driver for LG’s overall profits. The average selling price of the 7 million touchscreen phones that LG sold was USD 530. Especially important to LG’s overall success were high sales of premium models including Viewty, Voyager and Venus in both Europe and North America.

The growth of touchscreen phone sales also played an important role in advancing LG’s brand equity. The company’s brand recognition in the U.K. soared to 91.4 percent in 2007 versus 80 percent in 2005, according to internal research measuring unaided brand awareness. During the same period in the U.S., where LG launched a number of touchscreen phones including Voyager, Venus and Vu, LG’s brand recognition rose to 83.1 percent from 65.1 percent.

Future Growth Expected


“We were a true pioneer in touchscreen phones, applying for a total of 49 patents while developing the Prada Phone by LG,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President & CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “From the beginning we have worked to create phones that are extremely easy to use despite their myriad features. Bueno,aparentemente este tipo de tecnología en una pantalla permite contar con ángulos más amplios de visualización, una mejor legibilidad bajo la luz directa del sol, es más resistente, consume menos energía y es más mucho más delgada. Dolby Mobile is designed to allow customers to optimize and tailor audio for an enhanced entertainment experience. LG plans to apply Dolby Mobile technology to a wide range of multimedia features on its phones.

Some of the Dolby Mobile features that LG plans to incorporate into its phones include:

Mobile Surround, which delivers a realistic surround sound experience using headphones


Sound Space Expander, which creates a wide, rich, and spacious soundstage experience especially suited to music playback


Natural Bass, which adds powerful boost and bass extension


High-Frequency Enhancer, which enhances music and other content by restoring high-frequency effects


Graphic EQ, which helps tune the audio experience for different content types


Sound Level Control, which helps level out audio for a more consistent playback volume


Mono-to-Stereo Converter, which improves the playback experience of user-generated content


The companies held a signing ceremony earlier today in Seoul to officially kick off their collaboration. Dr. Woo Young Kwak, R&D Center Head of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, and Stuart Mitchell, Senior Vice President, Sales at Dolby Laboratories, attended the ceremony.

LG plans to begin launching high-end multimedia phones that incorporate Dolby Mobile technology from the fourth quarter of this calendar year
