Desde que vi las imágenes del nuevo Ubuntu Netbook Remix he querido probarlo. Para los que no lo sepan se trata de una distribución de Ubuntu optimizada y destinada para ultraportátiles (como el Asus Eee). Puesto que he terminado las clases (mi Eee lo uso principalmente allí) y estoy en exámenes (no voy a ir a ningún evento) he decidido trastear con él instalándole Ubuntu 8.04 y luego "actualizándolo" a Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Todavía no ha salido oficialmente ni hay ninguna ISO pero sí un PPA (Personal Package Archive) ofrecido por los propios desarrolladores con el que podremos tener la funcionalidad del Ubuntu Netbook Remix hasta que finalmente salga.

Tenía el CD de Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) y fue el que instalé. Al intentar actualizarlo al 8.04 (Hardy Heron) me indicó que la memoria del Asus Eee era insuficiente. Ni corto ni perezoso me bajé la versión optimizada del Ubuntu Hardy Heron para Asus Eee y la instalé mediante una lectora externa de CDs. Es bastante secillo: enchufas la lectora externa por USB al Asus Eee, te metes en la BIOS (presionando TAB al inicio) y seleccionas en Boot Devices como primera opción la lectora. Guardas, reinicias y listo.

La instalación fue bastante rápida y una vez lo tenía todo listo pasé a instalar TODAS las actualizaciones pendientes. Finalmente hice lo siguiente para instalar el PPA del Ubuntu Netbook Remix (NOTA: recomiendan que esto se haga en una Virtual Box. En mi caso no me importaba formatearlo todo si algo fallaba así que...)

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Y añadimos las dos siguientes líneas (repositorios) al final:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main


deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main

Luego pasamos a realizar un update, instalar lo que necesitamos del Ubuntu Netbook Remix y reiniciar gdm:

sudo apt-get update


sudo apt-get install go-home-applet human-netbook-theme maximus ume-launcher window-picker-applet


sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

¡Listo! Nos debería salir algo como esto y si no habrá que ir a Apariencia donde hay que cambiar el theme a Human-netbook. ¡Ya podremos empezar a trastear!

La verdad es que funciona de forma muy limpia y el menú central es muy útil. No me ralentiza nada el portátil y algunos efectos que vienen por defecto son muy "mac". En general pinta muy bien excepto por dos cosillas. La primera es que en ocasiones se produce un conflicto entre la aplicación activa y el menú central; y la segunda es que algunas ventanas se ven cortadas, los iconos descolocados, la barra inferior no se ve... Lo primero debe de ser un bug sin más y lo segundo tiene fácil solución: cambiar la resolución a 800x600. Lo descubrí porque conecté un monitor externo y se veían perfectamente. El problema ahora es que no consigo que mi Asus Eee tenga esa resolución, sólo me deja una de 800x480, si no es con una pantalla externa. ¿Alguien que me eche un cable? ¿Se puede hacer?

Conclusión: estoy ansioso de probar Ubuntu Netbook Remix en todo su esplendor. Me ha parecido genial la idea del menú central (facilita mucho las cosas) y que funcione todo tan suave. Si tendría que sugerir algo sólo pediría que las aplicaciones vinieran más optimizadas para ultraportátiles (cómo la optimización del Xandros). ¿Alguien más que lo haya probado y quiera opinar al respecto?

Gracias al trabajo de muchísima gente ha sido lanzado Wine 1.0, la primera versión estable tras 15 años de continuo desarrollo y versiones betas. Aunque la compatibilidad aún no es perfecta, visitando la Base de Datos de aplicaciones de Wine comprobareis como miles de aplicaciones si funcionan muy bien.

¿Que es Wine?

Wine, del acrónimo recursivo “Wine Is Not a Emulator“, hace posible ejecutar aplicaciones Windows en sistemas Unix y similares. En su corazón, Wine es la implementación de la API de Windows. Actuando como un puente entre la aplicación de Windows y tu sistema Gnu/Linux.

Aunque el objetivo principal era proporcionar una capa de compatibilidad para el software de oficina (Word, Excel, Powerpoint,etc), el uso más popular y extendido es el dado por los viciaos (en donde me incluyo) que quieren jugar juegos de Windows en sistemas Unix. Sino, echarle un vistazo el Top 25 en el que solo 2 de 25 apliaciones no son juegos.

No es sorprendente saber que Wine ha sido el objetivo de numerosas campañas anti-pirateria de Microsoft. Entre ellas, la de 2005, en la que los usuarios de Wine se les impidió a través del Windows Genuine Advantage recibir actualizaciones de Windows.

Por otra parte, El gigante de Internet Google, decidió apoyar el proyecto de Wine, aportando (según dicen) una gran suma de dinero en efectivo para asegurarse de que el software Adobe Creative Suite pudiese ser ejecutado bajo los sistemas Linux.

¿Como Instalar Wine en Ubuntu?

1. En primer lugar, abre una ventana de terminal (Aplicaciones-> Accesorios-> Terminal) y ejecuta este comando para agregar el repositorio APT de WineHQ a tu lista de claves de confianza:

Varias webs en USA han dado a conocer la nueva portada de WWe Magazine en la cual Jeff Hardy aparece con el título de WWE.

Este push a Jeff sería en poco tiempo, más si el tan esperado feudo entre Triple H y John Cena termino, cuando The Game fue cambiado a Smackdown en el Draft 2008.

Edge será el primer rival del asesino cerebral, pero el feudo este verano en U.S.A por el Título máximo de WWE será entre Triple H y Jeff Hardy.

Esta semana el Winnipeg Sun publicó una entrevista con la superestrella de WWE Jeff Hardy.

Hardy hizo algunas observaciones con respecto a su reciente suspención de 60 días por violar la Política de Bienestar de WWE por segunda vez  y haber perdido su casa en un incendio en marzo pasado.

"Perdí mi campeonato, mi casa, mi perro y mi oportunidad de estar en WrestleMania". Y lo peor que ocurrió en la misma semana."

Disponible para descarga la versión libre y gratuita de Lotus Symphony, una suite ofimática desarrollada por IBM a partir de OpenOffice y como alternativa a Office 2007 de Microsoft.

No se entiende bien la apuesta de IBM por sacar una versión propia en vez de colaborar con Sun para potenciar una suite libre que compita con la de Microsoft. A no ser que pueda funcionar como gancho para atraer clientes corporativos hacia Domino /Notes, también de IBM.

Lotus Domino/ Notes es una plataforma de trabajo colaborativo y correo, basada en una arquitectura cliente (Notes) / servidor (Domino) y que cuenta actualmente con versiones para Win y Linux. También hay versión de Notes para Mac.

Con Lotus Symphony 1.0, IBM busca reforzar su oferta: comprando su solución completa de correo corporativo y más Domino /Notes, una suite ofimática gratis de regalo sin que los trabajadores de la empresa tengan que cambiar de ambiente.

Al menos es la sensación que da. Yo ya he vuelto a Gutsy después de no conseguir grabar un solo CD, pese a todas las sugerencias de los distintos foros. Si el problema hubiera sido otro, quizá no me hubiera importado tanto. Por ejemplo, el problema del flash en Firefox, pese a no acabar yendo fino, tiene cierto apaño. Pero que en una versión vaya la grabación y en la posterior no… por ahí no paso. Si algo no está listo, mejor esperar que precipitarse. Si ni siquiera me funciona el Live CD que recibí de Canonical!.

Deduzco, en vista de estos problemas y otros tantos que han tenido otros usuarios, que a Hardy le falta un hervor, asi que yo vuelvo a Gutsy. Ahora me doy cuenta de la calidad que tenía esta versión anterior en cuanto a estabilidad y es la versión de 64 bits (tan criticada la pobre…).

Si la semana pasada os comentaba como instalar un Windows XP en un ASUS Eee PC 900, hoy os voy a indicar los pasos a seguir para instalar una Ubuntu Hardy en el miniportátil.

NOTA: Esta guía es una recopilación y traducción al castellano de varias webs y foros. Al final del post publicaré los enlaces a los mismos.

Como en el otro tutorial, el proceso se basa en dos apartados: el primero será crear una unidad USB con los archivos de la instalación y el segundo la instalación y puesta a punto del sistema.

Los requisitos necesarios serán:

• Una imagen ISO de la instalación de Ubuntu 8.04.
• Un memoria USB de al menos 1GB de capacidad.
• La aplicación UB8convert para volcar la ISO al pen USB (enlace).
• Un Asus Eee PC 900.
• Otro equipo con Windows para preparar el pen USB.

Many of the basic questions have now been answered and we can begin to move forward in earnest - remember though, we are not going to change the theme for Hardy radically as it is the last of the LTS cycle (stated in previous mails, launchpad blueprints, irc, etc).

The 8.04 theme won’t be exactly the same, there are plans to make minor improvements. Work on the totally new theme has not stopped either so now there will be plenty of time to make it great.

It’s disappointing that there will be no new theme, it was due to be one of the highlights of the release. Just think about the many other improvements that will make it in to Ubuntu 8.04 like Firefox 3, PulseAudio, Transmission, and better Compiz Fusion effects.

Of course, the juiciest items have already made headlines, such as the new theme that is being planned… “I for one, welcome our new hopefully non-brown themed overlords!”

What about the proposed changes that don’t deserve their own headline? Either you have to muck through that entire list, or you can simply read about it here. You can get more information about specific items by clicking on the name of the proposal, which will take you to a page that has a little bit more information about it. Without more from me, here we go.

User Experience

Ubuntu Theme for 8.04
We’re getting a new theme in the next release? Ubuntu has used close to the same theme since Warty Warthog – about 3 years, The REALLY interesting bit about this is how far this reaches… proposed changes include changes to the installer, bootup screen, wallpaper, application splash screens like Gimp and OO.org, Compiz effects, cursors, and even skinning WINE! This is going to be quite a bit of work, but in the end, well worth it.

Third Party Apt
Adding a 3rd party apt repository is more difficult than needed. Editing sources.list, or adding it to the software repository via GUI is a pain. This proposal focuses on creating a standardized file format (let’s call it .install file) which would allow a user to double click on the .install file, then apt would automatically install the program, add the 3rd party repository to the sources.list and automatically manage updates, etc. Very slick idea.

X.Org 7.3
This is something that SHOULD have been included in Gutsy Gibbon, but wasn’t quite ready… ah well, I guess we need to wait 6 months for this. The biggest feature of 7.3 are: Bullet Proof X – The driving force for this is to never boot up into text-mode if something is screwed up with the xorg.conf file. Very nifty. The direction this is headed is to make xorg.conf obsolete, and eventually run without it, which would be fantastic for new users.

Automatix-Ubuntu Team Collaboration
This is certainly a little bit controversial, since Automatix was raked over the coals for breaking upgrades to Feisty Fawn, and now they want to collaborate? Automatix makes stupid easy to install things that are in legal grey areas, such as codecs for playing commercial DVDs, or other proprietary software like Skype, Google Earth, etc. This idea would make it so that Canonical/Ubuntu does not have legal repercussions for including proprietary codecs or other software that isn’t redistributable.

Dual/Multi Monitor Gnome Configuration
Along with X.org 7.3, multiple monitor configuration within a GUI is going to be pretty awesome.

SlickBoot
This proposed change will give the distribution an improved user experience when booting up and shutting down. If you’ve ever seen a Mac boot up, you know exactly what this is trying to emulate. Transitions from the three graphical modes (text, SVGA, and high-resolution) are not really bad at the moment, but if Ubuntu can emulate how a Mac boots up, that would be pretty damn terrific.

Install on an existing filesystem without overwriting /home
This is by far one of the most annoying things that I have to deal with on a regular basis. Personally, I reinstall quite often to test out new distributions. Since getting an external 320GB drive it hasn’t been quite as painful, but for most people, they might need to backup the /home directory to avoid data loss when given the chance to upgrade every 6 months.

Improve Handling of Full Disks
Have you ever run out of hard drive space in Linux? Let me tell you, it is NOT pretty! In some cases, you can end up booting into text mode, with a read-only root partition. It is a royal pain in the ass, to say the least. This proposal is in the early stages, but suggests adding a notification that the disk is almost full, prompting you to run a cleanup wizard, and other ideas that make the problem less likely to happen in the first place, as well as (hopefully) making it easier to recover from if it does happen.

Integrate Prefetch into Bootup
Google’s 2007 Summer of Code is adding hard disk prefetching and optimization resulting in faster bootup times for Hardy Heron.

Easy File Sharing
Make sharing files between Ubuntu machines on a LAN/WLAN easier. Duh!

Single Click Install
Enable easier installation of software from the internet.

Add Remove Software Improvements
This proposes an update to the add/remove software program, which changes it into a sort of “online storefront” where the initial screen shows screenshots, top-rated or brand new applications, etc. If this is approved and pulled off properly, could be a HUGE improvement.

Simple Samba Integration
The Shared Folders utility is getting some upgrades. It will prompt the user to install Samba, no more adding users from the command line, and a simple checkbox will share all home directories on the computer.

Redesign About Ubuntu
“People are used to “About Name of Program” showing a window that gives the software version details, and copyright info. […] Ubuntu should be just as polished.” uname –r always worked just fine for me, but I can see why it’s important.

Networking / Security

Modular /etc/network/interfaces
“Split out the configuration from /etc/network/interfaces into one file per (logical) interface.” This is not a great idea, it’s a pain in the ass already to edit this and maintain correct syntax, why make it so that there are multiple files?

Dial Up Support
This will make setting up and managing Dialup and ASDL out-of-the-box, using Network Manager, very easy.

Improve support for encrypted file systems
Starting with Gutsy Gibbon, you can now install Ubuntu to an encrypted disk. The problem this addresses is adding support to install to a disk which would be auto-partitioned as an encrypted file system from the GUI, instead of using the text-mode alternate installer. Other ideas are to look for key files on USB sticks and other media, instead of just using a password.

Live CD- share this
Direct from the wiki: “Netboot server for easy setup of thin clients and machines which don’t have a CD drive.” Nice idea!

killall gksudo: Stop running GTK as root!
gksudo runs hundreds of thousands of lines of code just to show that that little box that asks for a password when trying to change administrative settings… and it is a little confusing to ask for the password before any changes are committed – why not stop asking for the password until the configuration tool tries to write to a file, then do it in a manner that doesn’t need to utilize as much code to speed things up a little bit.

Support

Measuring Download/Installation Success
In the next release, there may be some big-brother-ish ideas being included. It’s more accurate reporting that can give developers solid numbers for things like how many people download, install, and are able to run Ubuntu. The reason is to find faults in the existing procedures for acquiring Ubuntu, and address where problems arise. Hopefully these numbers will be shared with the community. One area I can already say is a significant problem is the lack of an integrated CD burner for Windows. I’ve heard many users say they’ve burned a copy of a distribution and then it didn’t boot. The primary reason for this is that they simply burned the ISO file itself to the CD, instead of burning the image properly. Now that Ubuntu is targeting a larger audience, it would be neat to have a windows user simply download an EXE file, open it up, and it prompts to insert a new CD and then provides some additional instructions for getting it installed and setup, perhaps even give an option to print out a PDF of those instructions? The executable would also provide additional information that this proposal is suggesting be recorded.

Identifying Local Users and Groups
This would be really slick. After you put in your location( integrated into the Time Zone selection), during the installation (or post-install) you would be presented with information regarding your local LoCo team and other local resources, such as a Linux User Group in your area. I’ve never been to a LUG or LoCo meeting, perhaps because I needed to seek them out… getting a prompt every reinstall might be annoying, but it would be a good reminder that they exist.

Packaging Section On The Forum
There’s a hidden packaging section (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=44) on the Ubuntu forums that needs to be better utilized. It is not a very active section in the forum, it either needs to be added to the main list of forums and promoted, or simply deleted.

Make screencasts available on the desktop
A Help->Tutorial Videos browser menu? This is a fantastic idea!

La verdad que para ser viernes es un buen casi término de semana, tener de nuevo tanto a “Adriano” como a “Eros“, en una versión conjunta, deja a uno cuando menos sorprendido, por que son dos grandes voces italianas, de dos escuelas diferentes.

“Adriano” no es un bisoño en este caso, y “Eros”, es alguien que comenzó su carrera hace unos cuantos años, verlo cantar con “Celentano” a mi me deja sorprendida, porque esta canción “Il Ragazzo Della Via Gluck” o lo que es lo mismo “El muchacho de la calle Gluck”.. veréis la gran química que existe entre ámbos, que son dignos de “quitarse el sombrero” al ser una composición para una sola voz, y son realmente un dúo en esta actuación “en directo” de la R.A.I.

Si esta versión es un encanto, mejor es escuchar el original de “Celentano“, para ver como cambian algunos compases de toda la canción y así como la base de guitarra cambia a bajo, de forma real. Mientras en la anterior, la guitarra era acústica, en esta es una base de guitarra, pero no acústica.. ¡Cómo pasa el tiempo! para todos/as..

Y rizaremos el rizo, un poco más, y en esta ocasión en un directo que realizó en Berlín en el año 1994, que resulta emocionante, porque en un 80% son espectadores germanos, y cantan (que ya quisiéramos muchos hacerlo solo regular)

En la cuarta la que canta es una mujer, y resulta peculiar escuchar a “Françoise Hardy“, esta misma canción, pero con una voz, como la suya hace que sea algo especial. Posiblemente no para todos, no siempre el mundo pensará lo mismo. Pero con ello ya cuento ..

Y como es el artículo 501 de Memoria y de memori@, seremos, “el muchacho de la via Gluck”.. pero traducida al español. Si algo siempre mantuve es que aquí, no hay ni fronteras. Y realmente no las hay, ya que es una francesa, cantando en italiano (pienso a veces que si se lo ponen en chino mandarín simplificado también contempla el hacerlo).

Un besazo, e iremos por el 502, y espero que mañana sábado.. si mi “pata derecha” y mi “pata izquierda me lo permiten”

La calle Savile Row se encuentra situada en el barrio de Mayfair, perteneciente a Westminster, el distrito más señorial y distinguido de Londres. En Mayfair se encuentran las tiendas de moda más lujosas de Londres (especialmente en Bond Street) y la embajada de los Estados Unidos. La calle Savile Row es mundialmente conocida por sus tradicionales sastrerías de trajes a medida (bespoke). La calle también es conocida como the golden mile of tailoring (la milla de oro de la sastrería).

La ilustre calle fue construida entre 1731 y 1735. Su nombre hace honor a Lady Dorothy Savile, esposa del arquitecto Lord Burlington. Inicialmente la calle fue ocupada por oficiales militares y sus familias. A principios del siglo XIX la aristocracia londinense concedió una enorme importancia al vestuario con George ‘Beau’ Brummell al frente como modelo del caballero bien vestido y elegante y que dió origen al término ‘dandi’. Brummell hizo que muchos sastres se congregaran en una zona próxima, Burlington Estate, en particular en Cork Street. En esos primeros años (1803) algunos de estos sastres no tardaron mucho en ocupar locales en la próxima Savile Row. En 1846 un sastre llamado James Poole abre una segunda entrada a la heredada sastrería de su difunto padre (Henry Poole) y se le acredita como el fundador de Savile Row. Desde entonces Savile Row ha sabido conservar hasta nuestros días la esencia de esos primeros sastres.

Las sastrerías están localizadas en hermosas y cuidadísimas casas del siglo XVIII. Los pisos superiores de algunas de estas casas albergan distinguidas galerías de arte como las que se pueden encontrar en el Nº11 de Savile Row; Laurent Delaye Gallery y Matthew Bown Gallery.

Cada sastrería tiene su particular e interminable lista de personalidades a las que han tenido el honor de realizar al menos un traje. Savile Row ha contado siempre con los clientes más distinguidos y conocidos de cualquier ámbito de la sociedad y la cultura del mundo. En los últimos dos siglos, prácticamente toda la realeza europea ha pasado por esta calle: El Príncipe Carlos de Inglaterra, Alberto de Mónaco, Napoleón III. Políticos como Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle. Ilustres personalidades de la historia como el mismo Lord Nelson. En 2004 se funda la Savile Row Bespoke Association para proteger y desarrollar el arte del traje hecho a medida (bespoke) tal y como se realiza en Savile Row. Se podrían relatar muchas historias y curiosidades de esta afamada calle británica pero les mencionaré solo una. En el número 3 de Savile Row los famosos The Beatles tenían su ‘cuartel general’ llamado Apple Corps. Un motivo más para acercarse a Savile Row si van a Londres.

Each person works on small portions of a project, and anyone is welcome to contribute. The finished product will be available freely for anyone to download and, in most cases, modify.

All very touchy-feely, carey-sharey, but why should you care about open source? You should care because the vast majority of common applications, even complex commercial stuff such as Adobe Photoshop, Windows Media Player and Microsoft Office, have free, open-source alternatives. And this point is worth reiterating: open-source software is free. No cost. Zero. Zilch.

Paid-for version: Microsoft Office
Open-source alternative: OpenOffice

OpenOffice is a feature-packed alternative to Microsoft Office. It's developed by Sun Microsystems in collaboration with a community of dedicated contributors. The primary applications of OpenOffice consist Writer (word processor), Calc (spreadsheet), Impress (presentations), Base (databases), Draw (vector graphics editor) and Math (mathematical formulae editor, similar to Microsoft Equation Editor).

The good: For home users and families it offers everything you'll need to write letters, publish documents, formulate graphs, build slideshows and design simple Web pages. It looks and works like Microsoft Word and because it's free, it'll save you about £119 -- the cost of Microsoft Office 2007. For families, OpenOffice is an absolute must.

The bad: Microsoft Office comes with Outlook, which is vital for most business users. For this reason, OpenOffice isn't an alternative to Microsoft's corporate solutions. It's also lacks some of the advanced design functions of the 2007 version of Word.

Conclusion: OpenOffice will be perfect for most home users. Business users will almost certainly need Outlook, though OO may still provide all the functionality needed for word processing and spreadsheet work.

Open-source alternative: MediaPortal

MediaPortal is an open-source alternative to Microsoft's Media Centre and offers PVR functionality as well as management of all your videos, photos, music and radio stations. It runs on Windows and has the ability to display RSS feeds and weather information. The attractive GUI can be re-skinned with loads of free and professional-looking skins and a vast array of plugins written by the community extend functionality in loads of ways.

The Good: It's an extremely easy piece of software to use and looks and feels just like Windows Media Centre. For use as a living-room PVR and a media handler it's superb. More advanced users will appreciate the many layers of customisability offered, too. High-definition content is fully compatible as long as your PC is up to the job, so wiring your box up to that shiny new HDTV will be no problem.
