Atlanta, GA - Slife Labs today introduced Slife 2.0, the next generation automatic time and activity management solution for the Mac OS X. Designed for individuals and teams who need to keep track of time, Slife frees users from having to manually fill out time sheets and manage their productivity. Slife Teams, a companion web service to Slife 2.0 extends the benefits of the Slife 2.0 client to teams and businesses.

Completely redesigned and based on Apple’s newest technologies, Slife 2.0 includes a simpler, cleaner user interface, 6 visualizations for activity analytics, advanced privacy controls, activity groups and productivity management through goals and notifications. All of these features complement Slife’s unique activity tracking technology, which observes user’s computers activities completely automatically and displays them in a set of rich and interactive visualizations.

“Slife 2.0 brings the idea of activity and productivity management to a whole new level”, said Edison Thomaz, CEO of Slife Labs. “It is an automatic time tracking tool that makes it incredibly easy for designers, consultants or anyone else to monitor how much time they’ve spent on projects. Once you use Slife, you can’t go back to time sheets. Slife is time tracking for the 21st century”.

One of the key new features of Slife 2.0 is its ability to help users set time goals for activities. It pioneers a new way to help users deal with the problem of information and distraction overload. Visual notifications and a new specialized visualization allow users to track progress towards personal productivity goals, such as spending only a limited amount of time per day visiting non-work-related web sites.

According to Edison Thomaz, “Slife is the first application that assists users in managing their computer productivity in real-time. With Slife, you can see how you are doing towards reaching your goals throughout the day, and become instantly aware of when you reach or miss them. In light of the barrage of office and Internet distractions we face everyday, Slife is an indispensable tool to anyone who wants to stay focused and get work done.”

In order to extend the benefits of Slife to teams and businesses, Slife Labs also unveiled Slife Teams today. Slife Teams is an automatic time tracking and activity aggregation web service. With Slife Teams, a group of Slife users can stream their activities in real-time to a centralized subscription-based web application, greatly facilitating the task of group time tracking. Slife Teams takes a ‘no-additional-work-required’ approach to group collaboration, offering a quick and easy way to keep team members aware of each other’s activities.

System Requirements:

Slife 2.0 requires Mac OS X 10.5 (Tiger) or later and at least 512MB RAM (1GB RAM recommended). Slife Teams requires any modern web browser.

Pricing and Availability:

Slife 2.0 for the Mac OS X can be downloaded for free starting today. Slife Teams is currently a free, invite-only web service. Companies and teams interested in the product should contact Slife Labs and request an invitation. Slife Teams will become widely available as a subscription-based service in the Fall 2008.

Slife Labs
Slife
Direct Download Link
Screenshot

Slife Labs is a privately-held company in Atlanta, GA building activity intelligence and analytics software for individuals and teams. Our two products, Slife and Slife Teams revolutionize the way people and organizations keep track of computer activities, manage productivity and collaborate around projects and tasks.

Segnala presso:
<a class="social_img" onclick="window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'scrollbars=yes,menubar=no,border=0,height=600,width=750,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,location=no,status=no');

Wikipedia

The BBC has an interesting news report, Warning sounded on web's future, on the worries of Tim Berners-Lee about the spreading of disinformation using the web. The article also touches on other related topics such as extending the reach of the web and improving the web's usability.

Regarding the problem of publishing insincere or unfounded information on the web, Berners-Lee cites a recent campaign started because of the activation of the Large Hadron Collider. Specifically, some groups used the web for communicate invalid beliefs about the world being destroyed by effect of the LHC. This use of the web is, in first instance, unethical. Further, it may transmit fears, and additionally, the information posted by such groups has no scientific grounds. This a typical example of misusing a system.

This kind of problem arises because of the web's intrinsic nature. The web is a different system... a system which is now inevitably linked to the behavior and trends of human society. The web is an open and complex system. It's open because we can add as much information as we want, and it's complex because it's composed of a huge amount of producers and consumers of information, and their interactions. There is other factor that shapes the web complexity: evolution.

The web changes at very high rates. The web's technologies an content change so quickly, that it's impossible for any person to assimilate all this evolution. After all, the user only wants to open her browser and read the news. Typically, she is interested neither in the technical details behind the publishing platform, nor in the path followed by the information until arriving to the final form on the online media. There is a tool the user recurs to in order to fight complexity: trust.

The user of the web has some expectations about her relationship with information: veracity, reliability, availability and security. However, these expectations are sometimes hard to meet in a system so open and complex such as the web. We are relatively accustomed to reading about privacy and copyright issues on the web. For example, the September 2008 Scientific American is a special issue on The Future of Privacy, loaded with plenty of excellent articles.

<p style="text-align: center;>

Disruption of privacy and copyright certainly undermines trust. Nevertheless, the web has too much power over the whole world. It can modify the behavior of social groups. Our modern dependence on the web makes us very vulnerable to the plots of groups and interested corporations. Therefore, structures for identifying trustworthiness of a site may be desirable. But I believe that the web itself tends to its own well-being. Precisely, its complexity and openness makes it very resilient to attacks and fake information. The web empowers the people and, in turn, is empowered by people. Ultimately, fake data will be identified and disregarded. It's the same idea behind Wikipedia's trustworthiness.

Finally, there are other interesting challenges identified by Berners-Lee. First, we have to look at extensions of the current web infrastructure in order to improve access to information (easier and broader access). We also have to protect the web of groups or corporations pretending to abuse the web to meet their egoist goals. We have to care for the web because, after all, our future and evolution is inextricably linked to the web's.

I found this information on Google Map site. I think we are in to something here. Yes as usual privacy shouts are out there. Cool down folks, how do you think if you press 911 on your cell phone, the emergency services find you? Today when we travel, just say from San Francisco to New York, non stop flight, we get photographed, videoed a multiple times. My motto is and to which many others oppose, is why worry if I have nothing to hide. At the same token, I do not want Google or anyone else to misuse my personal data. Those are two different issues. The My Location feature is available for most web-enabled mobile phones, including Java, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Nokia/Symbian devices.Get more info on the My Location feature and supported devices, or discuss Google Maps and My Location with other users.See your location on the map, with or without GPS. Save time and tedious keystrokes finding where you are, what's around you, and how to get there. Watch the video below to see how it works.Tags: Location based Services, my location, privacy, Google, google maps

Comreg has issued guide lines for VoIP providers regarding directory services. Comreg is the Commission for Communication Regulation in Ireland.Guidance for Service/Network providersThere are a number of steps which therefore need to be taken by market players. Directory ServicesIn the first instance the service provider who assigns a telephone number to a subscriber must inform the subscriber of their right to an entry in the NDD, the different categories of records i.e. listed, unlisted or ex-directory and the functionality associated with each category.Subscribers should be asked to signify their preference in relation to an NDD listing As the regulations define the NDD as a record of all subscribers “who have not refused to be included”, Comreg recommends that the default option should be listed” with the subscriber offered the opportunity to modify this to unlisted or ex-directory. It is essential that in offering the choice to subscribers, sufficient information is provided to allow an informed choice to be made by the subscriber. The information and the offer should ideally be provided at the point where the subscriber enters into the contract for services. Where this has not been done for existing subscribers, ComReg recommends that this be rectified no later than end February 2008.Having established the subscriber’s preference, the record should then be entered onto the NDD. Procedures for interacting with the NDD are specified in documentation which may be obtained by service providers from the NDD directly. Service providers may choose to have the process of interacting with the NDD managed on their behalf by another undertaking which is willing to undertake this task. ComReg wishes to emphasize however that the statutory responsibility to ensure that the subscriber’s wishes are observed cannot be delegated to another undertaking.Data Protection and PrivacyIn addition to directory information, the standard input form for a listing requires an indication of the subscriber’s preference regarding unsolicited marketing calls. By definition, ex directory numbers have not been included as records in the NDD and service providers had no need to interact with the NDD in respect of such numbers. As the legal framework regarding unsolicited marketing calls, can only protect those numbers which are recorded in the NDD, in 2006, ComReg and the Data Protection Commissioner issued directions and notices requiring ex-directory numbers to be entered into the NDD for the purpose of including such numbers in the “opt-out register” – the listing of telephone numbers where subscribers do not consent to receiving unsolicited marketing calls. The Direction issued by ComReg by ComReg is published as ComReg Document 07/100.The processes for service provider interaction with the NDD are set out in a series of documents which authorised undertakings may obtain by contacting the NDD directly at this address:NDD Manager,Eircom Ltd., St. Stephen's Green West,Dublin 2.Additional guidance regarding communication with end-users may also be obtained through ComReg at the following e-mail address retaillconsult@comreg.ieReleased PDF file.Tags: VoIP Regulation, comreg, data protection, privacy protection, directory services, do not call

Ask.com is betting that privacy concerns will sell their wares.. The fourth-largest search engine company will introduce a new and novel service today called AskEraser, which allows users to make their searches more private, once the AskEraser is turned on. Best part of Askeraser is the easy way that one could use it. People will be able to turn AskEraser on or off with two clicks.

NY Times Bits says that it is not much that Ask erases. Even if ask erases, there are more who hordes user data. It is like swimming among thousands of sharks, and one of them being a vegetarian. So exercise care, where you roam. How you ask, well I am yet to find.Ask.com and other major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft typically keep track of search terms typed by users and link them to a computer’s Internet address, and sometimes to the user. However, Google and Microsoft make search logs largely anonymous or discard them after 18 months. Yahoo does the same after 13 months.

Tags: privacy, ask.com, askeraser, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, search engines, SEO

Constitutional protection under Article 18 Comprehensive right to privacy with extensive court decisions Extensive investigations and cases reviewed by Data Privacy Authority; Authority has made a number of rulings, including that IP addresses can be personal data; and on video surveillance data Authorities exist at local levels as well Several interception scandals over the years; including extensive access to communications without court order Laws for preventing funding of terrorism have been applied to other crimes Lack of debate around introduction of planned electronic ID card Retention period for 12 months, and plan to ban anonymous pre-paid mobile phones Desde la publicación de este informe, hemos visto cómo el último punto ya ha sido fijado por ley, y hemos sabido de los planes de la DGT para controlar, mediante lectores automáticos de matrículas, los coches que circulan sin el seguro obligatorio.
